Read more...We have been talking seriously about re-landscaping our front yard for about 6 months. We thought that once we decided to do it, it would be done. Boy were we ever wrong. Our first bid was from a company that a colleague at work recommended, but the price was overwhelmingly high. Then we turned to Craig’s list and found two people. The first one bid the job with no measurements because he just knows how much brick he will need by looking at it. The second person came; told us our design (which we created) was flawed and showed us how we should change it….then she never sent us a bid. So, frustrated with Craig’s list I turned to the phone book. I called the first company whose ad and internet site seemed to match what we wanted to do, made an appointment with them and then they never showed up. On top of that our sprinklers decided to go on strike about a month ago, so we are hand watering our entire front yard.
So, I am frustrated and wonder if anyone reading our blog has any suggestions for landscapers in the San Jose area. Please help!

A lot of people are putting top 10 lists up on their blogs. Since I have found them fun to read I decided to steal the idea. Enjoy!
10 things you might not know about us:
1) We love to eat exotic foods and are pretty much willing to try anything once (Cyrus will usually try things twice).
2) We both love a good cup of java, but Cyrus can only drink coffee on a full stomach.
3) We have owned our house for 1 year.
4) We both love to travel for FUN! We have visited together Japan, Italy, France, Croatia, Canada, Germany, Wyoming, Ohio, California and Texas during our first 15 months of marriage.
5) We like to kayak, but it truly tests our communication skills- oh and Julia can’t steer!
6) We have been married for 15 months and we still do not have our wedding album from our photographer.
7) We occasionally, unintentionally leave the house dressed in coordinating outfits.
8) We are both 1 year away from a 2-month paid sabbatical!
9) We carpool to work most days during the week- Julia drives.
10) We have matching Mickey Mouse ears from Cyrus’s first trip to Disneyland this year!

I guess I have quizzed Julia over the years on which is bigger a nanometer or an attometer. Maybe not that important, but it is still fun to be able to think about such a big range of distances with some simple words. The entire range of conception of distance in orders of magnitude in the table below is about the same as the ratio of the strength of the electrical field to graviational fields ( electric field is 40 orders of magnitude bigger! making the gravitation almost insignificant.) I should point out that I dont use the size of the human hair anywhere in this post. I hate that as a size reference. Over used and not that useful. The amount it is used you may think it was a NIST standard or something!
10-24 1 yoctometer (ym) yeah really too small to think much about
10-21 1 zeptometer (zm) umm, umm, that is like small or something
10-18 1 attometer (am) size of a quark, electron radius
10-15 1 femtometer (fm) size of a proton
10-12 1 picometer (pm) wavelength of shortest X-rays
10-9 1 nanometer (nm) diameter of DNA helix, typical SEM resolution
10-6 1 micrometer (µm) diameter of typical bacterium
10-3 1 millimeter (mm) thickness of fingernail
10-2 1 centimeter (cm) diameter of my pinky finger
10-1 1 decimeter (dm) diameter of the cervix upon entering the second stage of labour
100 1 meter size of a dog (not one of those drop kick dogs, but a real dog like a lab or a golden retriever or something like that)
103 1 kilometer (km) a nice walk
106 1,000 km = 1 megameter (Mm) across the continent
109 1 million km = 1 gigameter (Gm) 1.39 Gm diameter of the Sun
1012 1000 million km = 1 terameter (Tm) 1.4Tm orbital distance of Saturn from Sun
1015 1 petameter (Pm) 9.46 Pm = 1 light year
1018 1 exameter (Em) this is a tough one, but maybe 15,000 stars are within this distance from us.
1021 1 zettameter (Zm) diameter of galactic disk of Milky Way Galaxy
1024 1 yottameter (Ym) diameter of the Local Supercluster
