Christmas Vacation

I sat down last night to write the last of my Christmas cards and realized that of my favorite Christmas movies was on TV- National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. I quickly changed the channel and as Cyrus came around the corner I announced what I was about to watch. His eyes lit up and he shouted “I love that movie!” It was one of those moments when you realize that the person you are married to is still a stranger in some mysterious ways. We settled down to watch together only to realize that they had put the wrong title on the TV guide- it was actually the original National Lampoon vacation, the one where they are driving cross-country to Wally World. We were so disappointed that at 8 pm we set out in our sweats to hunt down the movie we had our hearts set on.

Two stores later we had the DVD in hand. We rushed home and ended up laughing for the next two hours as we watched Chevy Chase work so hard for the perfect Christmas. At the end of it I said to Cyrus, “gosh I love this time of year”.

I know that there is more traffic and lines and you end up spending time thinking about what gifts to buy each other, but this time of year is more than that. It is about sending Christmas cards to share your trials and tribulations of the year with friends and family, it is about giving presents to those in need, about spending time creating and celebrating the holiday traditions you have grown up with or created over the years, taking a drive in the car just to see the lights and making sure that you say Happy Holidays to the person at the checkout or even a neighbor you don’t generally talk to. It is a great time of year and even though it is the busiest time it makes me stop, slow down, and think about how much my friends and family mean to me.

Happy Holidays!!!
