Well I guess I survived, but January 1, 2009 will be a day I wont soon forget.
We were having fun on the beach. Where? "Big Beach" or Makena beach. I wondered where they got the name. It turned it out may be because of the huge waves that are there. The trouble was they were breaking right on the shore and the breaks ended right on the sand.
So there I was body surfing and having a great time when we saw a great big wave coming. I decided to catch it and I did. The next second I was 2 meters in the air headed head first for the sand -- no water was there as the waves were breaking so fast as I said. Then I was bashed into the sand and I felt my shoulder give out. I was already out of the water almost so I just writhed on the sand right there. I yelled out for help and Julia started making her way in. There were some helpful folks that came to inquire as to my status. One very unhelpful suggested that I could pop it back in by banging my arm down while making a fist with my other hand under my arm. That turns out to be wrong and painful.
Next hour was one of the most painful of my life. Lucky there were some nice Canadians who came to help us out and carry our stuff back to the car. It was only a 20 min car ride to the doc. He was a very nice guy and was very calm. I wanted the shoulder back into place now! We did the pain killer and mussle relaxant shots into the butt and then we took a little rest. Before it really kicked in, I was demanding to know the whole procedure to get the thing fixed! We took an xray. (not my xray below, but looks basically the same. Oh yeah, there was sand all over the place and you could see it all over the xray.) Ouch! Imaging humerous 3cm down vs your scapula...

The good news was that it wasnt broken!! So then the pain killers were kicking in and he said we could try and "pop" it back in! I was sooooo ready at that point. I laid down prone on the table with my arm hanging down. I remeber I said "wow that feels a little better" Then he went thru the motions of putting the thing back in, but apparently it had already slid back in! This was great news to be and I was then "feeling no pain." See picture below. That is basically the whole story. My nose was a little scraped up, my eyes did not turn black after all and my ear drum maybe was a little ruptured but hopefully will heal up soon. I thought it was just water in there. I am feeling quite a bit better now but still not 100% yet. I had a day there where I could not hold Sophia -- pure torture. Now I just cant help at all around the house -- ask Julia :) Hopefully I will be near 100% after about two weeks, but I need to be careful for the whole rest of my life as I am at higher risk of dislocation forever. I guess it leads to one of my new years resolutions -- strength training. I want to be stronger! I guess the lesson is to be careful with big waves, especially if they are breaking really fast or in shallow water.

Oh yeah -- Thanks especially to Julia and Bianca for their support through the whole thing.
