All I want to do is drive....

Discovering her first car!

Sophia has been maturing so much recently. She says "more" when she wants more sparkling water, her favorite drink, and repeats many phrases and words. She is also much more agile, able to climb and dismount off our bed. Today she got her first car- a red coupe! She was so excited to drive it we almost had to feed her dinner in it.

Hubby's breakfast in bed

Ever since I was little I can remember cooking with my mom. I loved to mix anything (and I still do)- I have to hold myself back from getting all the lumps out of pancakes, etc as I like the uniformity. My mom, who cooked every night, and my grandmother, who cooked often, were good inspirations for me- but honestly the best inspiration to cook is my daughter. Prior to having her, I found a weekend or an evening once in a while to make something really special, but most of the time it was just good enough to eat that evening. Now that I am a mom I am truly inspired to cook. It started when she was 5 months old and started to eat rice cereal. Like a lightbulb I realized that she was experiencing food for the first time and that I could shape this experience. So, I got the food processor out and started making baby food. Before I knew it I was making all of her baby food and loving it…..and better yet, she was eating it which is truly the greatest compliment of all. Now that she is older I find myself making more breads, egg dishes, creative dinner options, etc that we all enjoy. Even now that I am returning to work part time I plan on cooking food for her that is fresh and also food that I freeze because she loves it.

I credit my daughter’s wonderful eating habits- i.e. she will pass up anything else for something green and she eats extremely well balanced meals to the fact that I built her palate to enjoy fresh, healthy foods.

In honor of this I have started a set in my flickr account devoted to food I cook. I hope it inspires you to cook for people you love!

Family Outing: Vasona Park

On Sunday we decided to take an afternoon family outing. We wanted to go somewhere easily accessible from our house, so we decided on nearby Vasona Lake and Oak Meadow Park. We had a great time watching and helping Sophia explore all the play structures. She went first into a fort structure where she enjoyed peeking at us through the window and going down the slide.

Next she played in a train- she got a kick out of the steering wheel and played with that for quite some time.

Lastly she went into the old plane they have at the park from WWII (I think?). She walked up and down the wing refusing help, even though it had a slope to it and then climbed into the cockpit and peeked over the side at us. It was a great outing and definitely one we will be adding to our repertoire.

Nutty Cranberry Granola

Even though I am working now, I am still trying to make my family healthy meals. In order to do this, I have been planning in advance, cooking on the weekends, etc. This weekend I made nutty cranberry granola. This stuff is easy to make, you have most of the ingredients in your pantry and it is dynamite. It is sort of the kettle corn of granola with a slightly salty and sweet taste. Although it is supposed to last a week, I don’t think it will.

Girlfriend Weekend: Las Vegas

Hotties!
Last weekend I jet set to Las Wages with a few of my closest girlfriends. We set out to go to a place that would provide us good food, fun nightlife and easy for everyone to get to.

We all arrived mid-day on Saturday and proceeded to eat lunch at a Tacos and Tequila; the food was good, but the company was better. We have not all been in the same place in long time, so lots of catching up and reminiscing occurred. After a few of us tried our hand at the slots, we decided to go and ride the New York New York roller coaster. It was terrifying for me, but it did get the adrenaline pumping. Fresh off the ride we did a little walking and chatting and then went back to our rooms to relax and get ready for dinner. Before dinner we decided to celebrate Ally’s birthday with some small pastries I scored at a patisserie and presents.

We dined at Little Buddha in The Palms- the food was wonderful. We had this amazing sushi roll with no rice or seaweed that melted in your mouth. The fish was wrapped in paper thin slices of cucumber and it was drizzled with a sauce that made it all come together. During dinner a group of dancing dragons came through and performed a small show, which was a treat. After dinner we headed to Monte Carlo for a little gambling and then dancing at Diablo. After dancing for hours, we headed back to the hotel for some sleep.
All the Single LadiesTaken
The next morning we decided to forego the buffets in honor of shopping (which shows how diehard we all are). We each walked away with at least one find. The group then split into the spa goers who headed toward Canyon Ranch at Venetian and the rest of us who went to Olives in the Bellagio for a delicious cocktail and then a walk through to see the Chihuly ceiling sculpture and gardens. Once we all met back up, we went to Serendipity 3 for frozzzen hot chocolates.
Chihuly Ceiling

For dinner that evening we were treated by D to Lawry’s. We all dined to our hearts content and then went to try our luck at Blackjack. I ended up winning and by the end of the weekend was up $50- not bad for an amateur. We ended the night singing in New York New York’s Piano bar before hitting the hay.

Monday morning prior to leaving we went to the Hash House a Go Go for breakfast. B had heard about this place on Man vs. Food and the website touted that many celebrities loved this place. It was not disappointing in portion side or taste. On that note we all headed our separate ways back to reality. I had an extra $50 in my pocket and lots of fun memories.
